‘For me cycling is not just a sport but a passion, my father first introduced me to cycling at the age of 12 and since then cycling has been my life not only in a leisure capacity but on a professional basis as well.
Selected by Scotland for my first Commonwealth games at the tender age of 19 and by finishing 8th in the road race won by England’s Paul Curran people started to take notice of my ability. I was then invited to ride for Italy’s second biggest amateur team GS Bottegonne near Florence headed by the great Italian sprinter Mario Cippolini. In 1994, I was awarded Honorary life membership of Johnstone wheelers cycling club for services to cycling, six scottish road titles later and a professional contract with Banana/Falcon and Foremost/Karrimor was to follow on my career path in cycling, with my last race being the Commonwealth games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.
After hanging up my wheels in Professional cycling I then put my knowledge to good use in the bicycle industry working for some of the very top brands including bicycle manufacturer Massi in Spain, Raleigh in the UK, and also Ridley bikes in Belgium where I was appointed UK/ Ireland sales manager for 6 years, this experience gave me a better understanding of bicycle geometry and what is best for the rider whether it be road, time trial, sportive or triathlon.
Visualbikefit was then born, having had the idea for a totally bespoke bike fitting service and a no fuss approach we wanted to make bike fitting a great experience for every customer, but I wanted to offer more so the “we come to you” idea made sense and we made our business model for a mobile bike fitting service working outside normal office hours and also weekends making Visualbikefit a consumer focussed company.
We are now proud to say we represent over 20 independent cycle shops in Scotland as their recommended bike fitting service.’

Do you need a bike fit?
Anyone who plans to ride a bike for any period of time should consider having their position assessed to ensure aerodynamic efficiency, comfort and power delivery, but there are various reasons why you should have a bikefit depending on your individual cycling discipline. Most of our clients experience discomfort when riding the bicycle, this can be back pain, hand numbness, neck pain and knee issues to name but a few, but we also have clients who don’t have any issues at all but just need to know that they are riding a bicycle as efficiently as possible. All cyclists, no matter how long they have been riding or their ability, can improve their cycling experience and performance by having a thorough analysis at VisualBikeFit, we also believe that a bike fit is only as good as the person who does the fit, thus the more experience the better the fit.
If you are considering buying a new bike and want to ensure that your bike will fit you perfectly and not cause you injury or discomfort, then you should consider our shop to shop option where we accompany you to a reputable bike store and help you purchase the correct bike for your particular activity. At VisualBikeFit we form an unbiased opinion and do not affiliate to any particular bicycle brand.
And lastly three bits of advice if you are reading this and are fairly new to cycling.
- Don’t spend too much on your first bike, £500-£1000 is more than enough and will set you on the correct path.
- Get a coach, this doesn’t necessarily need to be a fully qualified coach that you need to pay on a monthly basis but someone that has been around cycling circles/clubs for a good time, these people can offer invaluable advice.
- Lastly get a bike fit, it’s important from the start of your cycling experience that you are positioned correctly on the bicycle, this will save you time and most importantly discomfort and potential for long term injury occurrence.
The 3 simple rules above are advice we give to all new cyclists, if these are applied you will enjoy cycling to the full. Many of our bike fits are done with cyclists riding in the wrong position, wrong equipment for their discipline, and lastly given the wrong advice from the start from people not particularly qualified, we offer free advice during the bike fit process on all matters of cycling including cornering, descending, climbing, bunch riding, and sprinting to name but a few. We hope all of this information is helpful and above all stay safe and enjoy riding your bike.

Initial interview to establish an accurate profile of the rider. The interview will cover your lifestyle, athletic history, pre-existing injuries, cycling goals and aspirations.
With reference to your existing bike set up, on-the-bike measurements are taken and adjustments made to optimise your position. Changes may include altering your cleat position, saddle height and set back and handlebar reach and height. The pedal to foot interface is key to a comfortable ride and this is covered during the process.
Visualbikefit offers the Retül system which reads the rider’s movements while they are in motion on the bike, and accounts for all three planes of movement (3D), but we don’t believe that one system can emulate the expertise of the bike fitter itself and this is why the Visualbikefit system gives the added bonus of a professional bike riders view with also 30 years cycle industry experience working with some leading brands including Ridley, Raleigh, and Massi (see our experience). And so we adopt a Visualbikefit with the added bonus of using state of the art Retul 3D technology to grab the data from the fit itself. Here is a quote below from one of the founders of Retul Todd carver.
“There is this myth – partially because we perpetuated it with our marketing – that Retül is the best fit in the world,” said Todd Carver, one third of Retül’s founding team and the brand’s chief biomechanist. “But it doesn’t tell the fitter what to do. The Retül is just a tool; it stops there. It just captures the data. The way that we’re different, though, is that we actually have data, because the system captures it very accurately. No other fit system actually captures data, so ours is a data driven approach.”
All data is captured on computer and the client is provided with a comprehensive report showing their measured cycle position. We also offer cleat adjustment ensuring your cycling shoes are properly aligned.
Retül 3D Motion Capture system
The world’s only cycling-specific, 3D motion capture system featuring real-time kinematic data
- Rider movement is measured in three dimensions simultaneously, and dynamically while the rider is pedaling
- LED markers are captured at 18 frames per second creating millimeter-specific accuracy
- Data is collected dynamically as a set of averaged pedal strokes from the rider, not from an isolated position or view
The Visualbikefit usually takes approximately 2 hours and is conducted by Drew Wilson himself. ‘Rolling Road” is set up to visually check all aspects of position. This period of the process is an ideal opportunity for the client to tap into Drew’s knowledge and experience as a professional road rider and ask any questions they may have on cycling in general, or on specific disciplines such as climbing, sprinting, time trials or how to ride in a pack more efficiently. Please note that for Retul data capture we need a space of no less than 4×4 metre square to set up the equipment, an average size garage or living room is adequate. For all bike fits we adopt a one to one approach with no other participants or participating views.
- Check saddle rails alignment
- Check handlebars no damage
- Check brake hood alignment
- Check shoe cleat for wear
- Check shoe cleat alignment
Position rider on bicycle
- Visual check all positions and measurements
- Visual check pedal action
- Visual check hand contact
- Visual check seat position
